Homework 16th May
When John originally confesses for witchcraft, I think he does this just so he can survive. He is being selfless by doing this because he knows he will never be able to forgive himself for lying but wants to be there for his unborn son. I think he feels that he has to be there for his children and wife, it would be selfish for him to leave them.
Elizabeth still refuses to say allowed what she feels, and John seems as if he is searching her for a clear answer. As soon as John confesses he regrets it. HaTherone cries, "he will confess!Proctor will confess". After this statement it is clear the regret in Proctor's tone "Why do you cry it? It is evil! Is it not? It is evil!" . I think then it hits him that he could not live with himself for lying and the noble thing to do was to face the gallows.
